Finish Guide

Matte vs. glossy posters

Which finish to order for a gallery wall, a gig run or a lit lobby — an honest comparison of glare, colour, handling and where each one belongs.

The short answer

Choose matte when the poster will hang under bright light, opposite a window or in a frame — it swallows glare completely and lets ink read like pigment on paper, which is why it is the default for art and photo prints. Choose glossy for bold, photo-heavy artwork in a dark venue or controlled light, where maximum colour pop matters more than reflections. If the poster is going into a lobby, a retail window or a lit case, the honest answer is often neither: satin keeps most of gloss’s punch while staying readable from every angle, and it is the standard for cinema one-sheets.

Glare and lighting: the deciding factor

Finish is the most-guessed decision in poster printing and the one with the clearest answers, because light does not negotiate. A glossy poster opposite a window or under a run of ceiling lights turns into a mirror for part of the room, and the artwork disappears behind the reflection.

Matte removes that problem entirely, so it wins anywhere the light is bright or uncontrolled. Gloss earns its keep where you control the light — a dark venue, a back-lit bar wall, a spot-lit display — and the extra colour pop is what people see first.

Colour and artwork

Gloss makes saturated colours and photographs jump, which suits band posters, product shots and bold graphic work. Matte trades a little of that punch for depth and a calm, editorial surface that suits illustration, fine-art photography and type-led designs.

Because a photograph’s blacks and an illustration’s reds behave differently on each surface, Buy Custom Posters proofs colour against your file on the stock you choose. Read more on finishes in Matte, satin or gloss?

Where satin fits

Satin sits between the two: most of the colour of gloss, most of the readability of matte. It is the finish the film industry settled on for one-sheets because lobby lighting would wreck a full-gloss poster, and it is our default for promo, retail and lobby posters. When in doubt, satin is the finish that fails nowhere.

The verdict

Pick matte for art prints, photography, framed pieces and any poster that hangs in a bright room or near windows.

Pick glossy for bold, photo-heavy gig and event posters that will hang in dark venues or controlled light.
